Odor in your home’s water can be caused by a number of things. However, the most common cause of foul water odor is iron bacteria. Iron bacteria lives in your well, and travels through your water supply into your water softener. If your water softener has trapped iron, the bacteria will now start to grow and multiply inside your softener because it now has a sustained food source, the trapped iron to feed from. As the bacteria grows into a colony, it forms a slime coating over itself to protect itself from harm. It is this slimy coating that carries into your home and causes a “rotten egg” smell. Crystal Clean removes the trapped iron from your softener, thereby eliminating the food source. As a result, iron bacteria is eliminated.
